A blog to share news, events and happenings for adults 55+ who live and play in the beautiful Lynn Valley area of North Vancouver BC

LVSA has, since 1999, provided recreational and social programs and events to seniors in our community. We are proud of our members who participate in a wide variety of programs. Many also volunteer in many ways to help keep everything on track.

Park cleanup

On April 16th, Lynn Valley Community Association and Lynn Valley Seniors Association sponsored a cleanup of Pioneer Park.  About 25 volunteers from high school helpers to retired recreational gardeners came to volunteer whatever they could contribute.

This is done with the expert help of the District Parks Department who showed us exactly what we were pulling out.  Our job was to eliminate the horse chestnut seedlings.  There were hundreds springing up from the dropped conkers of last fall.

We also helped to cut down sycamore maples and holly which have made themselves very much at home here.  They grow wild everywhere.  The European blackberry was also pulled up.  Good thing we all had heavy gloves on!

On Monday morning, there will be some huge piles of branches and chopped greens to haul away.  A successful day.

Walkers!

These folks are part of one of most active program groups for seniors in Lynn Valley.  They are certainly the largest!

Every Wednesday morning, at 9.45 sharp,  they set off for another walking adventure.  It's winter on the mountain trails so for now they're walking some of our many urban trails.   These can lead  to a seaside walk or through a green space in the city.  We are lucky to have so many choices.

Here they're enjoying a break and learning a bit of North Vancouver history at the same time.

Once a month, the walking club ends the walk at a restaurant.  Usually a 'cheap and cheerful' lunch location is the choice.  This month it was the Tomahawk which is a great destination when you start with a bit of history.  Many long-time local residents have fond memories of fun at this legendary eatery.  Celebrity status, too...Bryan Adams once worked here!

If you'd like to join this energetic and social group, arrive before 9.45am on a Wednesday morning.  Meet locations may change once spring comes to the mountains so call Mollie Nye House before Wednesday morning for an update.

Books, Baking, Bistro and Bottles

Were you there?

We had lots of volunteers come out to help us on the big day.  This is a huge physical undertaking for our members and we appreciate all the help we got in setting up.  Thanks to all who pushed tables, stacked books, priced baking, ran errands and  carried and carried and carried.  And, did you ever see such a speedy clean up?  Wow!  That must have been some kind of record...thanks, folks!

The Bottle Drive was steady with never more than we could sort and count comfortably.  Many people dropped by with a few items or some with a few large bags.  Even though the weather was a little chilly, everyone was smiling and we had time to chat.  Thanks to all our donors.

There were lots of books to choose from.

There was a lot of delicious baking...

Lovely handmade crafts...

And hot soups to warm us up.

These big sale days are as much about the friends we meet and the fun we have together as they are about the money we raise.  We did that, too!

Thanks to Barbara for the photos.
